Shifting Gears

For the first part of my night of music for the upcoming Black Lab New Music Festival on Thursday Sep. 12 I am offering a realignment of the Phonologotronic.  

I am pleased to bring Nick Howell (trumpet), Jason Smith (drums), and Lane Garner (guitar) into the fold on.  The Future Dr. is still with us, laying down the low-end. We are now a quintet and I will focus more on alto.  I have dug through my vaults to bring forth a wide array of musics.  From 2 of my oldest tunes to a couple birthed specifically for this instrumentation, I am excited about the debut performance of this band.  

For the second half of my performance night Brad Van Wick and I are going to conduct an experiment upon any willing volunteers in the audience as we perform as Mnemosyne Duo.  There will be at least 3 ways you can participate in the "experimence" (a portmanteau of experience and experiment), More to come as I get details hammered out with all of the special guests.  

If you are adventuresome and willing to talk a bit about what you experience to us please come and help us figure out some physio-psycho-electro-acoustic-magic.

We got literary last Saturday thanks to some help from Will Leathem and company at Prospero's Uptown.   Not too many people came out, but we smashed into the silence nonetheless.

We can't all rule the world because the gravity of the situation is prohibitive.

Rehearsal recording.

It has been very useful of late to be recording our rehearsals and listening back to them.  Memory plays such an important role in how we become better as a group.  Remembering what we've done and being able to recast those elements every time in a new light is very important to me.  I don't particularly remember at the time we had rehearsal feeling particularly good about this run through, but, listening to it again, I can hear that I've been practicing, but still need to work more on it.

I loved this video as a teenager.  

Doesn't it make for such a great trio song?   The most challenging thing about a trio is that everyone needs to have a hand on the ball.  This of course is what makes playing in a trio so rewarding.

These come from a recent rehearsal.  Andrew might be new to some of you, but as you can see, he is an excellent choice.  Clem is such a brilliant amazing musician that his gravitation towards more and ever different project was inevitable, but this new formation has been good for me.   We play at the Take Five Coffee + Bar  on January 18th.   Please join us.  Now for a flyer and some teasers.

The thing I like best about having this band is that we talk about what we've done, or what we're going to attempt, and continue that communication while we play.  Together the arrangements that we come up with for our repertoire are sometimes magical.

Country Music

I love this song.  Of course, I'll never play it as well as the red headed stranger.  It's got lots of nice room to play around in.  As a joke to ourselves we decided once that we would keep going up a half step each time around.  I rarely have the patience to stick with it all 4 times.  

All of a sudden Kansas City is on a national spotlight for it's "Jazz District"  Which makes me think, I wonder if we could ever play a gig at the Blue Room? 

Such a seminal song and video from the late 90's.   We also play a Nirvana song, and I find it fascinating and actually not surprising that both Heart Shaped Box and Black Hole Sun are in Ab minor.  Seriously a bitch of a key, but at the same highly instructional.  

I remember fondly the big smiles all smeared across the people's faces and the lady with the man doing pushups and the couple with the great dane combing his hair and the "welcoming committee"  But of course if you are my age I'd wager you do too. 

Why does he treat me that way?

This comes from a set we played at the Czar Bar back in September.  I told you would get Pat in the next one.   Looking forward to getting some good footage of the new set at Coda coming up on Feb 2.  Enjoy

This flyer should say it all.   Except for the blurb about how we might have some dueling metallica songs.  I think I mentioned that last time.   That is all.

Probably this will be the last video from Jan 7 that I will post.  We have an upcoming set and are excited to add more than a handful of new songs to the book. 

Look for us at Coda on Broadway  on Thursday Feb 2.  Please come out and help us to raise money for Save The Music.   Also featured will be the Ruskin Quartet.   Its a battle of the bands style concert.   they've got a killer version of Ride The Lightning and from what I recall a nimble bass player and sax player.   Looking forward to it.    We hit first at 8, then they go on 45 minutes later.

but for now.   Annie Lennox wants to be abused by drumnbass beats.  it is unfortunate that some of my software prohibits the whole 90 degree rotation.  I'll need to amend that in the near future.

Recently Kent Burnham's company was pleasurably kept by Mike and myself.  This is but a glimpse of what went down.  Truly a wonderful night. 


of course the song is by Elvis Presley.  and then Dwight Yoakum did it too.  I'm sure others have as well.  I love it.    Don't you do what your big sister done.    Please, I'm beggin you, cause she broke my hear last time.   but I'm gonna be quiet now, and shake my hips.
